When somebody rents a room in a house. Does the owner has a right to inspect his/ her personal things without the renter’s knowledge while he’s away? The room is locked but the owner has a spare key. How about right to privacy? Any law on this?

I have been getting one or more calls a day from the opposing party trying to convince me to vote their way. I have a stack of postcards and mailing from this same party with my name and address on it. My husband, who is registered as the opposite party as I am does not receive anything. This seems to me to be a violation of my rights to privacy. How is it that this list can be sold with all of my personal information and do you think this is wrong too?

Do you believe that it exists? Its not a right explicitly stated in the Constitution after all, though many believe that it is derived from the 14th Amendment’s Due Process Clause. It has been attacked by many traditionally Conservative Supreme Court justices (i.e. Scalia) especially when applied to Roe V. Wade with the argument that the term "privacy in the bedroom" is too general a term. I believe that citizens have a right to privacy as long as their private actions due not negatively interfere with the rights of others. Where do we draw the line between the promotion of personal liberty and safety? Is every American capable of acting responsibly if granted full personal liberty? I clearly have my own beliefs and ideas, but I always love to hear others’!

LOVE your answer "Dawg54", but I do know that Roe v. Wade was the landmark Supreme Court case dealing with abortion rights. Understanding the issue of personal privacy is key to understanding any case that deals with personal rights, such as the right to sexual privacy, that cases like Roe v. Wade and Lawrence v. Texas deal with. =) Thank you very much for the suggestions though!!!
Scalia specifically addresses the so-called (or so he says) "right to privacy" in his dissenting opinion….

I like my privacy, as I assume most of you do. But I can’t put into words just why I want it so bad. And that strikes me as very odd. If I can’t even put it into words, how can I say that my personal privacy is so important that it should make it harder for the police to catch a criminal? What benefit does individual privacy have to society as a whole, so that it should be a protected right?

Can you help me out? Why is privacy so desireable? Does it do the group as a whole any good? Or is it just a primitive instinct that no longer serves a function? Or even less than that, some sort of modern cultural fetish?

New health care laws brought to being over the next couple of years present more reasons to know the laws and your rights when it come to protecting your privacy.

The electronic collecting and storage of personal medical records is not necessarily a bad thing, and for many decades this has been discussed  as a way to cut costs and streamline the expenses associated with the medical records process. EMR Software (Electronic Medical Records) can and should be an integral part of process.

Just like financial information, individuals need to be assured that they ultimately are in control of their personal medical records.

Republicans on this board seem very certain that the only reason Obama is supporting the USA Constitution, human dignity, personal privacy and the burden of habeus corpus in the Arizona issue, is because he is counting on votes from illegal aliens.

Perhaps one of you Republicans would explain how an illegal alien goes about voting – or for that matter any immigrant without citizen status…

I am trying to find information on the topic of celebrity privacy vs. the publics right to entertainment; and lets face it, celebrities have VERY interesting lives. Look at Brittany Spears for example, she told us years ago that she wasn’t "That Innocent" and now she has given us evidence after piece of evidence after piece of evidence to prove her point. She we coninue to be able to dip into their personal business or should we just mind our own and keep it moving?

Someone recently said that Democrats have become the party of both liberals *and* conservatives. Maybe that’s because they’re not interested in foreign entanglements, large deficits, reduction of civil rights & reduction of personal privacy. It seems that Republicans are conservatives in name only.

Republicans today will give lip service to conservative issues, but a lot of those issues end up as un-funded mandates. What’s happened to the Republicans that’s caused them to abandon traditional conservatism for neo-conservative values and agenda? Do you think there’s any real chance that Republicans will be real conservatives again, or do you think they’ve permanently become the party of the neo-cons?

My husband and I have been renting off base for almost a year now and he informs me last week that they are going to come inspect our house because of something bad they found (I won’t go into details) in one of the houses on base. (Note: I do not live in base housing. My husband and I rent privately.) I expect that they are going to come by some time between today and Friday.

Can they do this? Is it legal? Can I say no?

I’ve heard a variety of reasons as to why they might check a house (make sure it is a safe neighborhood, isn’t falling down, doesn’t have bugs, etc), but if that is the case, shouldn’t they have inspected the house before we lived here for almost a year? (Btw, my house IS tidy and IS in a safe neighborhood, etc.)

Are there some sort of official documents that say whether or not they can inspect my house? Have I lost my personal rights to privacy because I married someone in the military?

I’ve heard some people say that they are allowed to come inside just because he has to follow orders, but what if I personally don’t give consent for them to come in? I do live there too and I’m not in the military. I’ve had people tell me everything…That I have to let them in or my husband will get in trouble. I’ve also been told that I do not have to let them in that actually if they show up and won’t go away that, that is trespassing and I can call the police…and also if they were to punish my husband for that it would be considered unethical or something and they could get in trouble. So, what is it? (Note: I do know that my husband will be present when they come by, so it isn’t a fear of letting strangers into the house…I just value my right to privacy.)

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."–That is our Constitution. I just want to know why the military is not upholding the Constitution when it comes to me and my rights to privacy. Please don’t assume we have done anything wrong. I really have nothing to hide. I just don’t appreciate my rights being violated.
Also, they are supposedly checking everyone’s homes…not just ours.

Just so the rest of you know, the reason they have stated that they are checking out houses is that they said they found two kids wandering the streets (military housing area) naked and that when they took them back to their house they found it completely trashed…like, dog feces all over the place and they had been left home alone. I don’t even have children, so this doesn’t really apply to me in that area.

I’ve been told that it is going to be one of his
Sergeants and his Lieutenant…no military police.

I understand a house needing to meet habitability standards (although I’m puzzled as to why they would do this so late in my lease and not early on).

If there any right to privacy on a personal cell phone that is used during business hours when employed? Can an employer file a court order to subpoena the phone number call log and the content of SMS messages that an employee did during "contractual" work / business hours done on or in the premises of the offices off the employer? Does there need an action to show cause that the employee has violated business ethics for inside information in which any information on the cell phone device could not be used since that would be an invasion of privacy? I ask this because I hear Tiger Wood’s SMS messages are being investigated and opened to the public and it seems to be a violation of privacy to me.

I’d get fired if I tested positive, why should taxpayers give money to people who are buying and doing illegal drugs? I’ve got nothing against tax-paying people who smoke pot or do other recreational drugs in moderation, it’s their choice, and it is a private matter. Just like the everyday working Joe that goes out for a beer or two after work, but why should taxpayers have to pay for someone who’s abusing the system? You want your check? We’re going to drug test you. Don’t give me that garbage about personal rights, the government breaks all kinds of laws dealing with privacy and personal rights everyday. If you know up front that you’re going to be drug tested in order to get your federal aide, it’s not an invasion of privacy, it’s a choice. Do you want the help or not?

Before Facebook came to the forefront, there was an unspoken expectation of how social networking websites handles our private information. That all changed with the onslaught of Facebook.

It’s unbelievable how a company like Facebook, who’s privacy policy has been sloppy, irresponsible, and unethical, has been able to flourish and become so popular with millions of people. If it wasn’t for the good work of the privacy watchdogs, Facebook would not have been kept in check and they wouldn’t have felt the pressure to change their ways to be more in compliance with proper privacy standards.

Generally speaking, I think the type of people who sign up for a Facebook account are attention-seeking people who have never been burned before. As more and more people begin to realize how tyrannical this company’s privacy policy really is, and the resultant ‘forced sharing’ of their personal information, I think there will eventually be a backlash and more and more people will delete their Facebook accounts.

Even the roots of this Facebook company is shady – allegedly, the website was built based on stolen code by their CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook crossed the line that should’ve never been crossed when it comes to privacy standards. Although they’re attempting to make amends now by improving their privacy settings, it’s unlikely that it will be enough because of the simple fact that the company was not built on the right foundation.

I am working as a caregiver in a private home. One day while I’m working, i found a printed copies of MY personal emails at my employers desk! I was so shocked and shaken how it happened, how she accessed my emails and why she is reading and even printed my emails? I felt bad and I dont know how to approach her and ask her why she is reading or accessing my emails without my permission, it’s personal! BUt don;t know how and what are my rights are. Is it possible for me to complain her to…where??? what should I do?

I can’t think of anything more “unreasonable” than seizing private financial papers and effects every year without a warrant. It seems like a overt violation of the 4th amendment right to privacy. . . .

If a woman keeps on having more and more kids, and continues to leech off the system should the government have the right to order a woman to get her tubes tied? Believe me I am all for personal freedom, with minimal government interference in our lives, but if a woman who is irresponsible and has kids uncontrollably continues to milk the system, that is not fair to the tax payers, plus later on in life the probably of her kids turning into thiefs and killers is increased because of bad parenting……what im trying to get at is, at what point does a government have the right to infrindge on this womans personal privacy because doesn’t the government have to look out for us taxpayers?

I’m not saying like them looking thru my laptop and stuff. that’s reasonable… I’m talking about them looking at EVERYTHING I’v ever said, following me with the car when I go places, asking people what I say, telling there friends everything like my grades, publishing it to blogs, all my personal CRAP! and they have a spy whole in my bedroom door now and everything. I know that there ARE PRIVACY RIGHTS as stated in some writting. I live in Virginia… but what do I do? :( they keep doing everything!! they even had a hidden camera in my other bros room! it was in a stuffed dog!! but they said it was to catch there friend from doing something. but please help me! what rights do I have in Virginia?!?! nothing major! just for me to have some breathing space! please! :(

ok so i got curious on facebook once and registered. harmless enough.
then i see all the things where it says people you may know and i see my old cousin i havent seen for 9 yrs. i click on him and see his profile and am surprised…
i then search up and find that my dad is on there too and that he posted some pics of me and bro up online..
situation is: my mom and my dad are divorced. my mom had moved away from him while he was out at sea and left some pictures of me and my bro with him unaware of what he had been doing to us while she was out at sea. so later after we had moved out i had gotten up enough bravery to tell her that he had been abusing us all 3 kinds and the stories… she immediately contacted the courts blah blah blah. we went through the court system, all the procedures, the checking, the story proof checker crap. and all and eventually they decided that they had to believe us because even the doctors found there were mental scars from it and seizures/mental personality/other disorders that could definetly be caused from abuse and all. my mom n dad were fighting, him basically to get some supervision rights but that would have caused more seizures. so my mom tricked him and said ok lets settle this and have the doctors decide whether u can have visiting rights or not. so then the doctors decided to have him banned from seeing us due to what he had caused.
now that im seeing him even in a photo it really bothers me and even more so that he put our childhood pics up.. on the same day that i joined. i dont know if he knew that i had joined that day or what buti didnt like the thought and it really stressed me out. i reported the pictures immediately saying that they were an invasion of personal privacy but they have done nothing. is there a way to get them taken down?
even if the pics are his, my mom didnt know about it at the time and if she had known she would never have left him any of them.
is it a coincidence that he put them up on the same day that i joined too?
edit: i did not put up the photos. he did. i have already filed a report saying invasion of privacy for every one of the photos and they have done nothing
also it really freaks me out to talk to him.. and if i did since im 18 now hes been trying to track me down so if i talked to him he would be even more detailed in tracking me down..

and he also refuses to admit or ever apologize for what he did. its all i ask of him and he wont do it. he told the doctors we lied and that mom was drugging us and brain washing us to get us to tell them those things.

I made the mistake of donating to a charity last year, and ever since then I have been completely inundated with fundraising calls from every not for profit on the planet it seems. I understand now that charities share information with one another, I’m not sure if they sell it but they are clearly handing out my number left, right and center.

Why is this legal? They did not ask my permission to give out my personal info to anyone else. Why do charities not fall under the same privacy legislation as everyone else?

It’s really turned me off of donating.

I believe they’re unconstitutional and an invasion of privacy.

I will never go through a naked body scanner. This is not about who looks good naked or not. This is about an invasion of privacy. Even if the government mandates them in every airport, I will not go through one.

I just moved and my apartment is ground floor with the walkway to enter the building passing right by my windows. The windows all came with mini blinds pre installed- but which way of closing them gives the most privacy. Down- meaning that the part of the blinds facing you is down- with the arch towards you, or Up- meaning the feet of the arch of the blinds is towards you. I can’t seem to figure out which is better? Any personal opinions?

I just want to get the mod in trouble w/ the admin.

The mod’s are elected so they dont own the site. The only bad thing that was shown was someone’s name and address.

Critics say the scanners are unnecessarily invasive and abuse privacy rights.The money being spend on new security equipment ,they add, would be better invested in investigation and intelligence work to detect bombers before they arrive at the airport .What do you think ?
Metal detectors,yes , ID,yes.Personal search,yes.But no naked pictures of my body, please.I even prefer the dogs sniffing on me that the new machine.

I have cold, hard evidence that a former employer is accessing my yahoo email account. They must have gotten the password while I logged on at work. They probably had some key stroke software. Anyway, I know when I use a work computer for personal communications I am forfeiting my rights to privacy. However, now that I am no longer an employee, does my former boss have the right to access my private email account. Can I sue for invasion of privacy? If so, is it worth it? Would there be any damages? he didn’t send emails from me. He didn’t access a bank account or steal from me. He did invade my privacy. Had access to personal info, financial info, etc.? I already changed the password, but I still feel violated. He’s been accessing my account for over 6 months and I wasn’t an employee of his during that time.

So we have lost our right to privacy!

Now we have lost the freedom of speech, to be able to protest!

I basically says that anyone protesting the war or saying 9/11 was an inside job can have their bank accounts frozen and their personal property taken away?

They issued it in another language, but it has that same effect on American’s who wish to speak out against the war!

And these Con’s still say that it isn’t a threat to our Constitution!
