poll:: should a young teenager (13-15) be allowed internet privacy?
Should children be allowed to surf the internet without parental controls, spyware programs such as net nanny, and be granted personal e-mail accounts? Is it a violation of privacy to take any of these measures. Why or why not. Please state your age, I am conducting research on internet and parenting. Thank you.

I really think it depends on the maturity of the child. Parents should have a feel of how responsible their child is before granting them freedom on the internet. They should make sure they really understand the dangers of child predators, stalkers and fraud.
Overall, I think that when a teen enters high school they should be trusted with their own email and should be able to use social networking sites like Facebook or Myspace. I don’t feel that middle school age kids should be allowed to use these sites, however.
I wouldn’t say that parental controls are a violation of privacy, they are more a restriction of freedom. Rather than parents dictating what sites their children can and cannot use and asking their children for their passwords, I think they should have one family computer that is in a common space and limit the amount of time their children can use it. Teens wouldn’t be doing anything bad on the computer when they know their mom could walk into the room at any moment. It’s when young teens have their own computers in their rooms that they can use whenever they want that they get themselves in trouble.
