My husband’s brother is really into government conspiracy stuff – stuff like the income tax is illegal, that gold decorations on the US flag means we are under admiralty law (or did I get that backwards), that you can put up some sign in your car that you are a free citizen (or some other verbiage) and then you don’t have to have a driver’s licence, and the cops can’t search your car even if they see something illegal in plain sight, etc. etc. He goes to all these websites that have wacky legal ideas, and listens to weird shortwave programs.

My uncle, in contrast, destroyed his life basically because he assumed the nuclear bombs were going to fly any day. He is sure he has the answer to the dark energy in the universe too (all without knowing calculus and he doesn’t even have a super collider!)

What is the deal with this? Why are some people obsessed with conspiracies, etc? Neither of these two has schizophrenia. My brother in law is going down the path of my uncle – I expect him to be jailed for contempt of court one of these days with his weird legal stuff.
Neither of them are stupid – my uncle is actually very intelligent. But part of the deal is they think they know better than any of the experts. Thus, the physicists are stupid, or the lawyers & supreme court justices are stupid, depending on which one you talk to.

Someone recently said that Democrats have become the party of both liberals *and* conservatives. Maybe that’s because they’re not interested in foreign entanglements, large deficits, reduction of civil rights & reduction of personal privacy. It seems that Republicans are conservatives in name only.

Republicans today will give lip service to conservative issues, but a lot of those issues end up as un-funded mandates. What’s happened to the Republicans that’s caused them to abandon traditional conservatism for neo-conservative values and agenda? Is it possible to hack a network instead of a computer so that all the data’s transfered thru a sniffer (for example)? I have a secured (WPA-PSK) wireless network with 4 other computers using that wireless netwrok. I have a firewall (ZoneAlarm) on the highest settings (stealth mode) on each computer as well. I use firefox, don’t open any email attachments and am very specific about whose email I choose to open. How else can any hacker intrude? Would it still be possible to install a prog remotely (without a popular trojan perhaps). Wouldn’t I be able to see if some sort of notification if that were to happen? I’m paranoid because I know some people that always end up doing the same things as me because of the activity on my computer (& they’re shameless to copy what I do and then tell me about it instead). I think they are tracking what sites I visit, what I type (including forms on an internet browser, what I view, etc. I’d like expert advice from a network security analyst possibly.
So those open ports vulnerable even with a firewall? Would they be outgoing or incoming ports? and are they UDP or TCP? Because I can list ports I want to block on Zone Alarm. But is it even effective blocking through ZA? What’s the best way to scan and block those ports?
And what are the following ports for (listed in ZA firewall settings)?

There are very few simple legal questions, and the questions themselves are rarely written so completely and clearly that a definitive answer can be given. Nonetheless, on a daily basis I see answers to complex legal questions posted. These answers are often short (which can be a sign of a lack of rigorous analysis having been applied to the question), incomplete, incorrect, or all of the above. Although there is often a related statute, ordinance, regulation, or court rule, I rarely see a citation to one.

For example, a lot of people ask questions on here relating to criminal procedure, yet the answers claim no expertise based on experience as a law enforcement officer, district attorney, or criminal defense attorney (or any other legal training for that matter).

In the worst cases, I have seen responses (including those winning with multiple votes) that would amount to legal malpractice if the advice were given by an attorney. Having watched 100 episodes of "Law and Order" does not make one qualified to answer these questions or evaluate the correctness of the answer.

Yahoo! Answers is a great service. In some cases, communal knowledge is a powerful thing, such as when you want the answer to obscure trivia. If I want to know the first movie in which James Earl Jones appeared that was not in black & white, I am sure there is someone out there who can answer that. And unlike the answers to legal questions, the answer could be short and still be completely acceptable. The title and date of the movie would suffice.

But with regard to legal issues, the power of the community fails when responses are given and evaluated (in the form of votes) based on inadequate (or completely absent) expertise. This is particularly a problem when the answerer fails to disclose that he actually possesses no direct training or experience relevant to questions he is answering. So how do we fix this?
By way of clarification, I have never asked for legal advice on here (and given some responses I have seen, I never would), so the question does not arise out of personal disappointment with a response I received.

The question arises out of disappointment for the forum falling short of what it could be due to a lack of proper self-regulation within the community. I do not expect Yahoo! to take any steps to police the content, but the community itself can. Put all of the caveats in the terms of use aside, because it is there primarily to avoid liability. This forum could serve a useful function (rather than just pure entertainment) if the community itself was capable of exercising retraint.

I perhaps am being too idealistic and should realize that some people derive some sort of satisfaction from being seen as possessing legal expertise that they do in fact possess. So I suppose that it is too much to ask for people not to address things about which they know nothing.

So, i’m really paranoid when it goes to computer security, and
after installing several anti-virus’ programs and tools, my computer constantly says "Not responding" or freezing, and it goes really slow, on startup and in general.
I’ve installed the following programs lately:
Ad-Aware, G-data, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes’ Anti-Malware, Recuva, Spyware Doctor and
Spybot Search & Destroy.
Could it be incompatibility between programs? if so, please specific which i need to uninstall.

I have been a victim of criminal conspiracy and have proof- but it is out of a civil probate issue; it involves banking, real estate, stocks, guns, intellectual personal property, taxes,..& legal malpractice…. My love died last month. His mother, out of envy (I guess), shut me out of all preparations, and has denied me everything, ei. his ashes, his belongings, even MY stuff! Is it fair that children were generally considered personal property of their father, in the United States? Man say that taking a US born child to Japan with out her Americans fathers consent is the same as stealing personal property from the US to Japan, even if the six year old child wants to live in Japan with her mother and this is legal under Japanese law. In Jan of this year I had a ureter stent put in and it was done without any anesthetic. I was told that I would receive some morphine prior but
none was given ,I even screem "to stop it *&^&^& hurts but the kept pushing that sharp camera into my body and as of today I’m still noticing blood in my urine, plus after the procedure the doctor told me to get up off the table because he had one more patient after me ,but no was could I even move any part of my body so he picked me up off the table himself and put me in a wheel chair , I begged him for some pain medicine and he advised the nurse to give me 2 vicodines

This link (along with other variables which I’ll not include) keeps secretly trying to request data from my PC.

My security software tells me that the data it is requesting is the administrator login to my PC.

Obviously it is the result of spyware or a phishing program which I sucessfully remove each time it occurs.

I recently bought an External Harddisk. I’ve been a PC tech for going on 10 years now and up until now, I’ve been using xxcopy to copy data from a customer’s drive. When we were using Windows XP on our test machines, we didn’t have problems gaining permissions, but since switiching to 7, we’ve had user permissions error after error.

When I use the security tab, sometimes I can’t get permissions or ownership. In those cases, I have to go through the automatic permissions release by opening the folders in question through the normal explorer. None of this should be necessary.

If anyone out there is using a data transfer software that can ignore user permissions and roll right from one drive to another, I would be eternally grateful for a link to buy. If the software is free, that’s even better!
Assuming I switched to Linux, what would be the best data transfer utility to transfer data straight from a customer drive to my PC’s storage drives? Let’s say the new Ubuntu release I just read about? Are the built-in utilities enough or is their drag-and-drop much more comprehensive than the over-bloated Windows D&D?

A friend is in mid-divorce and her spouse has custody of the personal computer & all photographs it contains (including some of definite character defaming origin). I’ve been doing web dev for a few years now with my sites being hosted on a shared server.I’m getting a dedicated machine,but a voice in my head is saying "do it yourself." I’ll have my own server & a possibility of having resellers.

My educational background is in Sys Admin,so I have a understanding of what’s needed to setup,secure & maintain systems,but I still need some info.

I’ve come up with a very basic plan of what I think is required:

1. Get a server + setup software (Debian / Redhat + Antivirus? + Network Security? + PHP / MYSQL etc + Cpanel / WHM)
2. Find a data center
3. Find a Teleco to connect the server to the net
4. Maintain system (security+performance) with patches & software updates

Although I need to do more research for step 1 & 4,my main concern is 2 & 3.What do I ask the DC & Telco?Do I setup the server offsite,then send it to the DC for them to connect,or do I personally go in & do it myself?When calling the Telco,what info should I have on hand?

Why is computer security so easy to bypass.
In Xp you can lock your files and folders from other users so they cant view them but if you attached the hard drive with xp on it to a vista pc or laptop vista will bypass xp,s security and let you view all files.

Why is is so easy to bypass vista passwords too And why is it that you can use a usb device to take controll and get sensative data from pcs and laptops.

I have always learnt how to bypass security by any means.
Even the secure pc can be breeched so why is pc security so weak?.

xp & vista are very weak and most of the population use windows even with the security packs installed and the latest updates installed a pc can still be breeched.

I do not think anyone who owns a pc would be safe security wise so why do people even bother with security programs most of them cant detect newly programed code and by the time they do its too late.

Hmm – I’m not getting a picture of the council’s function. This was during War, with Spain & France as enemies. Why did the Prince’s Council meet on April 29, & why would mariners go to them with concerns about the enemy attacking their ships? Would only mariners in the Duchy’s realm attend the meeting, or would other merchants in the convoy, such as the many from Bristol?

I am in agony beyond belief. I cannot sleep. Seems that after nearly five years, my attorney did little to develop my PI case. Did not talk to the four witnesses, did not depose the defendants (owners of the art gallery).

Lost everything I worked so hard for. Did get 100% Social Security disability. Needed compensation, though, to get back on feet.

I’ve had my 5 year old desktop secured with antivirus,spyware,firewall,adware,etc. I just purchased my first laptop & since I’m now wireless, my paranoia has come up. Aside from the usual antivirus/spyware/firewall protection, do I need to get something with "wifi security", "bi-directional firewall", and bluetooth protection(‘bluesnarfing’ and ‘bluejacking’ can allow attackers using easily available software to hack into data held on the laptops, or use the machine as a conduit for other activities)? With all these different security programs I’m starting to wonder if they’re really necessary. I’m running vista ultimate & IE7 (which have protection & encryption), Norton Internet Security, keep my file sharing "off", & I’ll be installing Windows defender and Yahoo’s antispyware. Is this enough to keep my laptop data safe in a public wifi area or do I also have to get more security like the one’s I mentioned above? My apologies for the long post & gratitude to those who took the time.

4 sisters on vacation in Florida — all professionals rented pontoon … returned pontoon & later that day contacted & told they had done 00 damage — cracked the motor … they disputed this and were told "fine just go home and hire an attorney … we are under maritime law and we always win our lawsuits .. the company then said they would settle for 00. I work for a small non-profit agency, which we have around 30gig of data that is currently backed up on tape nightly and stored off-site. Problem is we don’t have a good restore procedure in place – mostly for the fact that we have no extra machines which can read the tapes other then the servers which made them (and could be useless in a restore situation.)

So I started to look at backing up data on small USB flash drives. All data will still be backed up on tape since out of the 30 gig, 20 of it is archived data that we would not need access to from USB drive in an emergency.

Anyway, with a USB drive – we could simply hook it up to a laptop and get our important data from that.

#1 concern – Security. I’ve seen some flash drives that have hardware encryption in them – what is the advantages/disadvantages vs. Software encryption from lets say Norton Save & Restore program.

#2: Can anyone think of any other reasons we would not want to do this? Any other ideas or thoughts? Thank
Well I will need to use the encryption (which is why I’m asking about it)

This will be used as backup to our system – and if the backups were stolen or something similar, I do not want to be responsible for calling 15,000+ people to let them know their personal information may have been compromised because of unsecured data being out in the public.

Running out of viable ideas and time to locate a legal malpractice attorney in the Los Angeles area.
