Titanic Quarter Set To Change The Face Of Belfast
In 2012, Belfast is set to celebrate the region’s most famous centenary- the 100th year since the launch of the White Star Liner, The Titanic. 35,000 people were employed in Harland and Wolff’s Shipyard in Belfast, the biggest in the world at the time of the Titanic’s launch.
In place of the working shipyard, which has shrunk to a workforce of less than 1,000, the plan is to build a new community in its place, named The Titanic Quarter, with many different developments springing up, almost overnight, all over the once much-loved land.
Everyone knows the tragic story of loss of life felt beyond doubt, both in Belfast, where the Titanic was built, and in Southampton, where it was launched in 1912, when it crashed into an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic. Almost every street in Belfast suffered a loss. The youngest and last remaining survivor, Milvina Dean, who was a baby on board the Titanic, died in May 2009.
The Titanic Quarter Visitor Centre is to tell the complete story of the world famous RSM Titanic. Every year, on the anniversary of the Titanic’s launch, Belfast City Council holds story-telling and commemoratory events for both children and adults alike, and this centre will act as an ideal location for these important community activities.
Although developments in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter have been facing difficulty over the last 18 months due to economic difficulties across the UK, plans for the development of the Titanic Quarter are now moving again, with apartments underway and the funding now in place for a Visitor Centre and Hotel.
Developments of great interest to local business people, local residents and visitors will include:
A £97 million five storey landmark centerpiece building, a tourist, leisure and cultural facility, and an exhibition gallery which will tell the story of RMS Titanic, and also Northern Ireland’s ship building and maritime history.
- It will also house banqueting, retail and restaurant facilities, conference suites, a community resource and a unique ‘flying theatre’.
Developers hope this will prepare for the visitors which will flock to the birthplace of the Titanic.
The Thompson Dock already hosts visitors, showing them the vast size of the liner, and the adjacent pump house gives a welcome stop for a snack or coffee, while giving information of the life and time of the shipyard.
The Nomadic Vessel is a relic of these times, which has recently been brought back to Belfast and is currently being restored in preparation for the centenary in 2012. The Nomadic is the only remaining reminder of the times, and its role was to ferry people from ship to shore. It is fitted out in the same style as the state rooms on the Titanic, and was used by 1st class passengers to transfer from the dock.
We have already enjoyed 8 years of entertainment from the Odyssey Complex, which incorporates an ice rink, auditorium, and 12 cinema screens, as well as restaurants, bars and clubs. The area has already become a community-based hub for Belfast, known to host family funfairs and, most recently welcomed the International Tall Ships Festival and Continental Market.
Many thousands of cruise passengers already visit Belfast every year. Titanic Quarter is a close distance from the docks, and this new tourist attraction will bring these passengers ashore, enhancing Belfast’s economy. The Titanic Quarter will be a great way to celebrate a century of maritime history and enhance the Northern Ireland tourist experience.
Tourists are expected to flock to The Titanic Quarter, a unique and compelling reason for tourists to make Northern Ireland their chosen destination. The site is expected to attract around 400,000 visitors, which will be of economic benefit to the region, as well as be a draw for Northern Irish people, in search of top-class accommodation, office space and entertainment.
Completion is expected to be early 2012.

Leather industry hit by rupee volatility
Analysts have observed that the recent appreciation in rupee against the US dollar has posed a serious threat to the competitiveness of Indian leather industry in the recent past.
Representatives of the leather trade bodies such as the Indian Finished Leather Manufactures and Exporters Association (IFLMEA) and the Council of Leather Exports (CLE) have expressed concern over the losses incurred by SME leather exporters on account of strengthening rupee against the dollar.
“Volatility of rupee against the US dollar has weakened margins of the small-scale leather exporters, thereby putting tremendous pressure on the growth of the Indian leather sector,” said Arvind Bangad, proprietor of Euro Line, a small leather bag store in Ahmedabad.
The rupee volatility has only added to the woes of the SME leather units, which were already suffering due to the global economic slowdown, thereby resulting in demand decline, fall in order book and poor capacity utilisation.
Besides the support extended by the Government of China to its leather export sector, the chief competitor of the Indian leather industry, in the form of 17% export value-added tax (VAT) rebate has also dealt a severe blow to SME leather exporters in India.
“Leather products manufactured by Indian SMEs are rapidly losing out to the Chinese leather exporters as the VAT rebate and subsidies offered to thelatter are making them more competitive,” said Nausheen Ali, proprietor of Shaheen Leathers, a small-scale leather shop in Kolkata.
Given the situation, industry players have sought support from the Indian government and have called for extension of subsidies and demanded a stimulus package for the sector.
Mukhtar-ul-Amin, president of CLE, has demanded that export volumes be allowed to hedge against currency fluctuations because most of the SMEs engaged in the sector fail to hedge due to various shortcomings.

Is it okay to contact an HR person if their email and phone # isn’t public? I really need some opinions! 10pts?
I submitted a resume to Sony Music through their online job board. I know those online boards by themselves are like throwing your resume into a vaccuum, so I looked through LinkedIn and found the Sr. Director of HR of the company. I FedExed my resume addressed to her and stated in my cover letter that I would follow up in a week.
I still have a few days before I’m going to follow up, but her phone and email is NOT public. It is not listed on the company website, and the only way I even knew she existed was though some LinkedIn snooping. However, with a little digging I would be able to find both her phone and email address. Is this an invasion of privacy? And will it harm the chances of me getting a job?
I am talking about a company email address and phone number… both of which are not hard to find if you know the name of an employee.
It is strange how people’s opinions vary, isn’t it? The person who said they have been on the receiving end is most likely a retail manager of a porn store. Someone who really does not give a crap about the type of employee he hires. Sony is a global billion dollar company. They truly understand employees are their most important asset.
As a recruiter I find jobs for people where jobs ‘do not exist’. It is called, “Candidate Marketing”. We essentially do what you are doing, a smidgen more complex. There are public resources like Pipl, Linkedin, Zoominfo, Yahoo/Google business directory, Forbes, BBB and such. Linked in is a professional social networking site. If you re-review this HR’s person’s linked in page most likely they have openly listed, they are looking for industry contacts and open to speaking to people about job orders.
Without an ounce of hesitation this clearly demonstrated Drive, Desire, Intention and Motivation. It also demonstrated creativity and commitment to a job when compared to a schlop(is that a word) that just fax blasts their resume to 100 companies and hopes something sticks. When you call find out about the job. Tell him/her you found them on linked in, tell them you are in linked in. Tell them this is exactly the job want then do a skill set transition list. I have done X, X, and X and I know this is why I can benefit your company because these skills will transfer. Google the person’s name. . . Do a pipl search on them, find out who they know. Read the company mission/objective or propositional statement. Understand what makes Sony the best place to work. Then during your brief 5-10 minute discussion, this is known as an “Informational Interview” mirror this information back to them. Work it in to demonstrate you did your homework. Don’t read it word for word. But work it in. “yes, yes I read that Sony opened a new call center in 2010 in California. I’ve done this type of work before and feel my XXX skill could be beneficial.” You tell people what they can do for them and how you have done it in previous jobs. This is called a behavior interview or “STAR” interview. GO GO google them now, stop reading, dah. However, you are reversing this process and you are somewhat in control.
This picks your resume out of a pile of random resume’s and makes you a known. When someone calls an HR rep this forces them to fish out your resume. You are no longer a schlop. Have a list of 3-4 questions you want to ask: Market Penetration, Propositional Statements, Department Operations. Do not ask about “meisms” – whats in it for me. Salary, hours. . . . That comes later. Today you sell yourself when they buy you then discuss that crap. Also find someone on linked in who works in the department you work in. Shoot them an email or add them as a contact. Find out about what they like, tell them you have interest in possibly working in or around their department. People love talking about their jobs – espc when it is a prospective employee. .. it boosts our ego. OMG if you can casually drop that…. I have been speaking with Bob, who I met on Linked in that gets you 10 points off the bat. Retention is always higher through employee referrals than ‘blind candidate hires’.
Anyway, re-read this. It was written without clarity in a somewhat humorous tone. The person that told you not to is an obvious idiot. Sadly idiots run many companies as such things are not yet illegal.
Lastly…. When you speak to this HR person. A great line. I am going to be going out of town next Friday. IF you are uncomfortable lying then plan an actual trip. Tell them you believe this is the perfect match. Explain to them your skill set transition, demonstrate you have done homework and ask some great questions. People are remembered by the questions they ask, usually not the answers they give. Tell him/her since you are going out of town you would like to schedule an interview on XXX, XXX, or XXX. Demonstrate you are the person they need to hire create urgency. If I had my choice between hiring a candidate who was just sitting on their ass doing nothing or hiring a candidate who was interviewing with competition and marketing themselves to competitors who would I go with – dah? Of course I will not let the competition get you. This method also forces the employer to make a decision on the spot. They will tell you

The Philadelphia Eagles have also found their way into popular culture. The famous novel ‘The World According to Garp’ had a character that was previously part of the Eagles team. The Disney movie, ‘The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon’ featured Tony Danza as a garbage man who plays for the Eagles.
